PORTRAITS OF A MASK
July 2007
Premiered at Exeter Cathedral on 18 July 2007

This concerto was written for me by Michael Csanyi-Wills and was given it's first performance with the Amadeus orchestra in Exeter cathedral, with a second performance at Wells cathedral. The work is for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra and is in seven movements, with each describing a different aspect (or mask) of the same personality. Each piece conveys a different emotion or personality trait, such as self-awareness, motivation, paranoia, anxiety, power, bitterness and acceptance. If you would like to access the score or recording of the work, you can write to michael@moviefonics.com

MEIN BLAUES KLAVIER
March 2006
Premiered at Wigmore Hall on 06 March 2006

This work for Soprano Saxophone and Piano was written by Cecilia McDowall who was inspired by the poem Mein Blaues Klavier by the German Expressionist, Else Lasker-Schüler. Though the composition is essentially abstract the fractured, tilted world of the poem pervades the piece; it is as if the broken, disused piano, standing in the shadow, is a metaphor for all that has been lost. The work opens with a bright-edged four not motif which then becomes fragmented; it takes many shapes before its final utterance, narrowing down to a single note at the end of the final section. The central section of Mein Blaues Klavier is a lament in which the two instruments intertwine their melodies over a falling bass line.

SUITE 'MIDVAR'
February 2006

Adam Sherkin wrote this three-movement suite for Soprano Saxophone and Piano which derives it's musical origin from three Jewish religious chants. The structures employed in its three movements are inspired by Baroque dance forms, namely: the allemande, sarabande and corrente.
